History of Toms River

The Fascinating History of Toms River, New Jersey

Formerly known as Dover Township, the name was changed to Toms River Township in the year 2006 through a renaming ballot. The history of the township dates back to June 24, 1767, when the Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Franklin, created the Dover Township by signing the Colonial Legislature approved charter. In earlier times, Toms River served as an important port and a stopover for whaleboats, schooners, and sloops. It is because the inlet at the present-day Ortley Beach gave town access to the ocean. In 1812, the inlet was sealed due to fierce nor’easter and all attempts made by the locals to reopen it fell short of success.
